Putting Together a Startup Marketing Plan

Feb 20, 2012 ~ Written by Jeff Taka

One of the hallmarks to success in any facet of life is the ability to prioritize in an effective manner. Putting the most important things at the top of your to-do list will give you the edge in almost any situation. In the world of business, it’s no different—the successful businesses are those that come up with effective strategies that prioritize the important things to market their products and services in the best way possible. If you simply begin selling your product and expect success without the proper planning, research, and advertising, you’re bound to fall flat on your face. So how do you come up with an effective marketing strategy for your business?

First, you need to define your target market. To whom are you selling your products and services? If you’re in the business of selling an alcoholic beverage, for example, you won’t want to come up with an advertising campaign that targets children. Make your target market both realistic and optimal. Small businesses won’t be able to handle a huge market, and large businesses will struggle with a smaller market. Define your customer base first, and then begin planning the next step.

When creating your plan, consider the balance between your resources and available time and the needs and interests of your target market. Be creative, but reasonable, with your marketing. Include fresh techniques, guerrilla marketing tactics, and business partnering in your plan. Cover all bases necessary and be confident in the implementation of your marketing strategy.

You should keep solid, accurate records of everything that you do. Keeping a database of all relevant actions related to your business will ensure that you do not run into any trouble and that you will have the ability to track clients, monitor your success, and make necessary changes to plans as a result of this information.

Remember to think progressively, too. The internet is an extremely powerful tool for advertising and it can significantly improve your success if you use it in the right way. Be honest and assertive with your online advertising campaigns, but try not to be too annoying. E-mail marketing campaigns based on distribution lists kept in your records will allow you to keep in touch with your customers outside of your business.

Be professional in all of your interactions and in your appearance. Consider branding your products or services with a recognizable logo or slogan. Keep your reputation high by maintaining a strict policy of professionalism and organization, and you’ll make an impact on your market for sure.

Coming up with the right market plan is absolutely essential to your success in the business world, so take great care in preparing and implementing your own!
